Friday, 15th September 2006What is it with so-called caring, religious people?
Why can't so called religious and spiritual people live in harmony? Recent news would appear to indicate that it's now the muslims turn to get annoyed at the Pope and his recent statements. I think everyone needs their heads banging together - or perhaps even photoshopped together.... Why can't everyone respect each others views, respect each others right to free thought and speech, acknowledge that other people can have differing views to your own and respect that? As David Icke says, the three keys to harmonious freedom are to respect our own right to be unique and to express that uniqueness, to respect everyone else's right to be unique and to express their uniqueness and thirdly to ensure that no one ever seeks to impose what they believe on anyone else.

We got a good book on that matter from our local library and most books where not as influensive as your information. I am very glad to see such information which I was searching for a long time. This made very glad Smile Dec 16th, 2009 8:05am

Religion is much more powerful and it really helps.Regarding the world conflicts, i haven't figured out the cause...it's beyond my understanding. Jun 28th, 2007 11:04am
Emily said... They can’t live in harmony for the simple fact that they think they are the only ones to be right about the truth. The second reason refers to the fact that they want to have as many members as possible and they can’t tell a new one that those whom he has just flee from were almost right about God. Lionel said... You had me worried Paul but my copy of 'The God Delusion' arrived today. I would like to thank Dawkins for providing back-up to one of my long standing assertions (often put forward on ZFC) on the origin of religious belief in individuals. This is that mind altering substances play a key role, either taken extraneously by accident or by design, or brought on by some form of mass hysteria. Dawkins pins this one to the wall with his mention of the US Supreme Court ruling, on 21 February 2006 that members of the Centro Espirita Beneficient Uniao do Vegetal be allowed to carry on drinking hoasca tea which contains the hallucinogenic drug dymethyltryptamine despite that drug being an otherwise banned substance. Looks like we could be set to witness an explosion of religions based around the imbibing of sativa tea or TCH tea. One can get away with anything as long as it is under the banner, shield, of religion. How do we know this? The Bible tells us so. Sep 28th, 2006 2:50pm

I found many other items on Dawkins including a recording of a current Paxman, Newsnight interview. Gavin, In response to your, 'The current increase in the climate of fear can be seen as a counter-stroke of superstition against rationalism' I would add that this is more down to the working out of the PNAC (Project for the New American Century) so as to ensure mastery of shrinking global energy resources. It would appear that instigators of PNAC have had to improvise and re-group in the light of disappointing Caspian area reserves. Otherwise I agree with your assessment that religion is a means of control. This is why I back the message that Dawkins puts over. Sep 25th, 2006 3:23pm
Paul said... Thanks for that Gavin. Very interesting. Also, Lionel, did you hear the interview with Dawkin's on BBC Radio 4 this morning. Sounds like The God Delusion might be an interesting read.... Sep 24th, 2006 8:39pm
Gavin Wraith said... According to Fraser's "The Golden Bough" religion appeared in primitive societies as a mechanism for coping with ignorance about matters that might affect survival. Saying "the gods made it" is a way of saying "I do not know what it is but I suspect that it is important". Priests and politics stem from the realization that if you can pretend to arcane knowledge you can control people through fear. Samuel Harsnet wrote very clearly on this in "A Declaration of Egregious Popishe Impostures" in 1603. The current increase in the climate of fear can be seen as a counterstroke of superstition against rationalism. Sep 24th, 2006 8:38am

Lionel said... Unweaving the Rainbow is a good one to put under the noses of those who naysay evolution with some building upon themes from The Blind Watchmaker. A Devil's Chaplain is not all Dawkins. Dawkins in this uses the writings of others, including Douglas Adams and Stephen Jay Gould, with his own introductory essays or amplifications interleaved. Lionel said... Dawkin's next book 'The God Delusion' is out at the end of this month, or early October, and promises to expand on arguments in A Devil's Chaplain. I have not yet finished his last book, 'The Ancestor's Tale' which is a mommoth (nothing woolly about the arguments therein though) work par exellence. Sep 19th, 2006 4:33pm
Paul said... I shall have to keep an eye out for that one. Thanks. Mind you, I've still not read " Unweaving the Rainbow" yet! Sep 19th, 2006 12:05am

Lionel A Smith said... It would help if more folk read 'A Devil's Advocate' by the illustrious Richard Dawkins then they will learn that religious beliefs are but viruses of the mind and thus require immediate medication in the form of a dose of rationality. All IMHO of course. Sep 16th, 2006 10:02pm
