MotorStorm Rocks!

Having unpacked and setup my new Playstation 3 I thought I'd try out one of the exclusive launch titles for it. MotorStorm is one of the most awesome driving games I've ever played. As I've played most things over the years, ranging from the original Need for Speed on the 3DO system (remember that?) right through to next-gen racers on the XBox 360, I'm pleased to report that Motorstorm blows them all away. It basically pits you against a number of other racers (either AI controlled or other humans via online play). You can choose from a variety of vehicles from nippy motorbikes right up to huge trucks which can pretty much demolish everything that gets in their way - all in superb, crisp 1080i high definition.

This is where the fun starts though because the environment in the game is completely dynamic. If you collide with a 'beware mud sign' or stack of carelessly arranged oildrums or scrap cars then things start go go flying, so you have to be careful to avoid the wreckage on subsequent laps of the track. That's not all though, as it's muddy out in the Arizona desert - and with loads of buggies, cars and trucks whizzing around the place, it's set to get muddier. And muddier it gets. As the racers start to churn the ground up, all the mud, puddles and general condition of the track start getting worse for subsequent circuits of the track. Just as well there are a number of short-cuts or alternative routes around the tracks. Problem is, the other players know this too - so it pays to choose your vehicle carefully at the beginning. The 'Big Rig's can just plough through most of the muddy gullies whereas the bikes can whiz around some of the narrow ledges and footpaths - just don't collide with something sliding on the mud though!

Of course, there are many immovable objects to make things decidedly hairy, and even a Big Rig will explode into 100s of pieces when you slam into a cliff face or large boulder, especially when you've pumped the Nitrous up to maximum (not too max though as that itself can cause your engine to overheat and explode!).

MotorStorm certainly rocks - and it's definitely a "must have" game for Sony's new Playstation 3. It's so addictive I've not even opened "Resistance: Fall of Man" - which is supposed to be THE number one game!
